Headache can be a serious and debilitating disorder which affects millions of Americans. We offer subspecialty consultation services on headache and facial pain with a goal of long-term sustained management and improved quality of life. We strive to accurately diagnose head pain disorders and simplify effective medical management. Head pains can be caused by medical issues, trauma, surgery, or can be a primary problem without other cause. These disorders include:
Some of the latest medications were researched and consulted by our expert, Dr. Moon. We offer occipital nerve blocks, facial blocks, trigger point injections, inpatient management, and botulinum injections for headache and nerve pain of the face.
Dr. Justin S. Moon is a fellowship trained headache sub-specialist from the Mayo Clinic. He is certified as a headache expert by the UCNS which is the accreditating body of the American Academy of Neurology. He is a consultant physician to professional sports and NCAA teams. He adapts the principles of conservative and simplified treatment plans to meet the needs and lifestyles of individuals. We do not believe narcotics or barbiturates are helpful in long term management and will not prescribe such medications to patients.
Migraine Headaches-
Migraines are thought to be an inherited disorder. The migraine headache can present as a throbbing pain, but in chronic headache patients it could show as a low grade pain or even stabbing pain in the scalp, face, or behind the eyes. Headaches are debilitating, but only a part of the problem. Light, sound, and smell sensitivity can be extreme. Vertigo, nausea, and vomiting can also inhibit ones quality of life. Appropriate treatments can include over the counter vitamins all the way up to prescription medications and botulinum injections. The key is to attach the appropriate therapy to the degree of severity of the headache and the patient’s lifestyle. After appropriate therapy, patients can often stop medication and continue to live headache free.
Trigeminal Neuralgia-
This is commonly a misdiagnosed disorder leading to years of disability and excruciating pain. Common problems not only include missed diagnosis, but also improper diagnosis leading to nerve ablations and facial surgeries. True trigeminal neuralgia is an electrical shooting pain of the face that lasts under a minute in duration under a very specific distribution. Only very specific medications help with this disorder. We also work with expert neurologic surgeons who specialize in surgical intervention.
Post Concussion Syndrome- Head injury and traumatic brain injury have been hot topics in combat medicine and in sports. Ski/snowboard accidents, mountain biking accidents, and motor vehicle crashes also account for significant amounts of headache, mood changes, brain fog/memory problems, insomnia, vertigo, light/sound sensitivity, and nausea. Dr. Moon has given a lecture at the Mayo Clinic on post concussive syndrome and takes a special interest in treating patients with this disorder.
